Yesterday I was quite enamoured by a story of giving where you live from the TELUS International President. TELUS is well known for its Canadian *Give Where You Live* campaign. Over the past few years, TELUS International has expanded this value to Latin America and the Phillipines, where employees go out regularly to participate in community giving. Everything from building houses for the homeless to teaching English.

Did you know you can build a house in the Phillipines for $1400?

The goal is to build 7000 houses by 2025. The video was amazing.

I needed a kleenex.

Yesterday I called up an old friend —- only to find out that he’s suffering from H1N1, just got separated, and is on the verge of a potential job change. Nothing like getting caught up!

Think About Being a Better Consumer

I used to think I was a responsible consumer.

But I’m not. I’m not really any better than any other middle-class citizen in Canada. The bigger problem is that I don’t know how, or have the tools at hand to be better. I still buy things I don’t really need. I still want things I don’t require. We still spend money on inconsequential items.

If I was smart, and wanted to buy things, I would concentrate on those items that would come in handy in a time of crisis: camping gear, solar panels, sleeping bags.

Even if there’s not any crises in my lfetime, those things would certainly come in handy, regardless.

Maybe I can become a smarter consumer.

He’s a wickedly interesting painter in T.O.

I check his site regularly for new creative bits, and also to renew my love for some of the things he’s already created.

Nothing soothes a brain itch better than Hahn’s creations. There are so many options - this one is one of my favourites…..

Buy a Pair of Cowboy Boots

It’s one of those things that tickles the back of your mind. The niggling suspcion that you’re missing something significant. Of course. You need cowboy boots.

I’ve been toying with the idea for the past 2 months, only to be thwarted by sites that don’t ship to Canada, by out of stock boots, and the final straw - by boots that couldn’t be shipped until March. How can a girl go to Calgary for 4 days without a pair of boots with her? I think that’s one of the first things they check at customs.

Now I’ve got boots.

Or will have, in 5 days.

Procrastinate a Little

There’s something to be said for not rushing headlong into a task or decision. Take some time, think about it.

Rushing means not being thorough. :-) I’m a glorious procrastinator at times. I’ve found that mulling something over often results in a better solution, or decision or outcome. Certainly, you’ve got to be thinking about doing something, and that time of thought can completely change your plan of action. The results could be astounding.

So - go ahead. Put of until tomorrow what you should be doing today.

Listen to the Falling Leaves

It’s too easy to get completely wrapped up in the day to day insanity that is likely your life (it’s’ mine, anyways).

Today I stopped for 15 minutes and just listened to the sound that falling leaves make. It was soothing, and a reminder that another season is upon us. Another season passed. The leaves were fantastic. Like dry drips out of a maple tree faucet.

Take 15 minutes tomorrow to listen to your leaves.

Think About How the Economy Downturn May Effect Your Finances

I've been doing some soul searching over the past few days, and a fair bit of reading from Canadian economists on the impacts of the insanity south of the border.
That being said, it's a time to reduce risk, reduce overhead and trim back on the low hanging fruit [expenses] that could increase our *working capital*, in the event that we find ourselves in a place where we need all the working capital we can get.

How is the economy going to effect you? What have you thought about? Do you have a plan, just in case? it could be as simple as cutting back on the 300 channels you have on cable.
