« More Perspective on the Evacuation »

Lina Diyab, a Halifax lawyer, complained that after being told to come to the port, she had been left to stand in the sweltering heat for seven hours without any further word from the embassy despite the fact she is allergic to the sun.“Somebody is going to answer for this. We deserve better treatment,” she said to cheers from a crowd of several hundred people with similar complaints.

Again I say - when did this woman and the mob completely lose their perspective?  It's not as if their resort reservations were cancelled.  They were in the middle of a war zone.  Please people.  Get a grip, you sound ridiculious. What the heck are you doing in Lebanon if you are alergic to the sun and don't like the heat?  You should be thrilled that you are alive, and not in a war zone any more.  What about all the citizens who are from countries who simply CANNOT come to rescue their people?

    It's all about perspective.

From what I understand, we are paying for the evacuation of these people with our tax dollars.

So many people go to the middle east to work, make tons of money with low taxes and then when there's trouble, they get a free trip home.

    Am I off-base when I say I think that's wrong? Am I misreading something?

I don't think you are misreading a single darned thing. I utterly took for granted that it was our tax dollars paying for their trip home!!
    Thanks for making me double-grumpy!

I think the canadians there have a lot to be angrey about. Yeah, it does take a while to get everyone out, but Sweeden did it. All of this "Hurry up and wait" while Stephen Harper takes resources away so he can wander around the area with his entourage and pose for Photo ops.

Don't forget this *wasn't* a war zone a few weeks ago. I bet it wouldn't be if Canada and a few other countries actually told Isreal they're beeing stupid. How many civilian deaths just because 2 military personel were captured? How the hell is invading another country "apropriate response"

I most pissed off that Isreal basically has the permission to do whatever they want, an "civilized" countries like Canada are just sitting on our hands and letting the Isrealis terrorize anyone they have a grudge against.

Yes. The evacuation is taking a while, and yes, I wish we didn't have to pay for it. We wouldn't if the government told isreal to back off - or at least stop their carpet bombing and go for a surgical strike where civilians would be spared.

John - you raise some very decent points about how other coutries could let the disagreement between Israel and Lebanon get so very out of control.
It likely has something to do with the fact that Lebanon doesn't have any oil.

The problem is that other countries stuck their nose in to begin with.

Nothing like a double-edged sword for each side:

    1) Make war to resolve whatever stupidity currently exists.
    2) Garner as much attention as possible by involving any nosy idiot that sticks his shnozz into the situation.
