« Toronto Island Airport Gets New Airline »

Travellers in Toronto will be able to begin booking charter flight reservations with Porter Airlines in the coming days now that the company has won approval to make the Toronto Island Airport its home base. The airline will begin offering round-trip service to Ottawa beginning in mid-October. Fare and schedule information have not yet been released. The private airline also plans on offering short-haul flights to other destinations in Canada and the United States. The airline said Tuesday it had received an Air Operator Certificate from Transport Canada and a licence from the Canadian Transportation Agency, an independent quasi-judicial tribunal.

Porter Airlines approved for take-off from Toronto Island Airport

I will take this as another good reason to move off the Quay.  New airlines at the airport, helicopters at Ontario Place... entirely too many fireworks for the average human (and neurotic dog).  The folks who live at the edge of the city, along the water live there for a reason.  The water, the peaceful vistas and the occasional magical storm. Now, noise makes it difficult to find the calm.

I would imagine the community groups are completely up in arms now. When we were leaving, they were aready planning to storm Ontario Place and take the helicopter pilot hostage.

Did i mention how quiet is is in Oak Ridges?

    :-)

Ugh. They should have thought about the noise before they moved in next to an airport and an amusement park!!!

The airport was there first, Ontario place with all it's amusements were there first, the fireworks were there first.

If the people living in the ugly condos on the water front don't like what's around them, they shouldn't have moved there. I'd love to send them all to Oak Ridges. I can't hear their whining from there. :-)

oh you evil little bugger ;-)
I think the trick is the politics involved - every new politician/mayor/gov't promises to do away with the island airport... and they get so close to being successful. And everyone gets all optimistic and excited that it will get shut down.... it's not terribly efficient the way it is. I've tried 3 times to fly out of that airport when I lived down there, and there were never any commuter flights. It was just about only open to hobby fliers. And Helicopters. Lots of Helocopters. If it could have added more value, it wouldn't be such a pain. I'd love to fly to montreal from there.

And hey - i had a damn good looking condo.
    Poke.

One of the problems is that the people near the lake shore wont let jets on the island, forcing the airliners to use older less efficient turboprops (Which are still powered by jet engines)
They whine, but don't make any sense. Many small jets (Say Cessna Citations, or Lear Jets) are *much* quieter then the Dash-8s that are used, but really few reasons to shut down the airport have to do with reason. if it was really noise they'd lobby to get the gardner removed, or removed the big ghey party boats that blast their music. If it was about keeping water front clean, they'd move out and bulldoze the condos. Some claim it's safety, but the approach/departure path of 5 out of 6 runways are over water - nothing to hit. Compare that with Pearson, or Buttonville which are in the middle of built up areas. The last argument is pollution. How much more pollution is created by business people having to fly into person (and sitting in a holding pattern) then commuting down town - instead of simply walking to the airport?

    O.K. I'm done ranting for now :-)
