« Toronto Hydro Telecom For Sale? »

I suppose the news is leaking faster than an old washing machine…. that Toronto Hydro Telecom is looking for a new beau. But I’ve always been confused between the relationship between Toronto Hydro Telecom, and Hydro One Telecom. What makes it even more confusing, is that both companies seem to share the same sales team, and VP of Sales - which makes me think that it’s really one company, just with different sales channels? Or two companies with 1 sales channel?

Sure - THT has the Toronto Wifi Service. Do they also have the new data centre in Toronto?  Or is that HOT? Neither site has data centre information (that’s easily found).

Aha!  I found that it really is THT that has a new data centre, despite the fact that they don’t really mention it on their site…. A news release from the Seaboard Group has the details…

Oh - what a tangled electrical web we weave.

Probably confused themselves, reading Marks blog, looks as if they are running sans leadership. Wonder if the character that was on the news all the time is still there? Met him once, not very impressed.

Maybe some assets for Telus in the East??

Hey there Albert - i met David Dobbins - he was a pretty neat guy - at the Telecom Summit last year. He was a little cavalier, but interesting nonetheless ;-)
Fingers crossed regarding assets in the east.
400 odd kms of fibre would be a nice accessory ;-)

    cheers,

They may share a sales force, but can they get WiFi to work consistently?

Hey Jules, I just came across your blog while doing some searches on THTI. Here is a question for you (and anyone else reading): Does it make sense for the City of Toronto to sell off this valuable asset only to buy back Telecom services from a third party down the road ie. Bell/Telus/Rogers??

It's no secret that the city is strapped for cash and Mayor Miller just today announced a 3.75% property tax hike...ouch! Sure, selling off assets creates a short term cash grab, but there is huge merit in the city owning its own network infrastructure and not having to pay 3rd parties for data storage, co-location etc.

THTI has a huge fibre network which every GTA Telecom provider has their eyes on like salivating pigs at the trough. However due to intense marketing, THTI is known to the public mostly for their WIFI network. In reality, this was built purely to arouse interest in the company and to put THTI's name out to the masses. Don't be surprised if you hear sometime in the near future that the WIFI project was NOT a success! It's a shame the public doesn't know what an enormous asset (fibre) the city stands to lose should THTI be sold.

Any potential buyer should also be aware that THTI is a union shop and it is doubtful that its employees would be willing set their company free without a strong fight.

The selling off of THTI is bad news all around! Consumers/business owners will be left with fewer choices, the remaining Telecom giants will be one step closer to becoming monopolies hell-bent on profits and sky-high prices! We should fight to keep THTI publicly owned.

    Hey there Phyber,
Thanks for stopping by and posting!
I'm torn - THTI may simply be up for grabs because that's what the trend seems to be with the various utelcos around the province. Is the city using THTI for all its networking? I don't know that answer. Could it be cheaper in the long run to outsource? I don't know that answer either.... But it's certainly going to make for some interesting conversations in the future.

    cheers,
    jules
